There has been one previous meeting between these two players which came at the 2021 Wimbledon and Medvedev had won that second round match in straight sets. A lot has happened since then for that result to hold too much significance here.

For the fifth time in a row, Alcaraz carved out a straight-set win but this could have seen his opponent Jannik Sinner make life a lot more difficult for the Spaniard than it eventually panned out.
Alcaraz was on court for nearly two hours in his 7-6 (4), 6-3 win that had Sinner miss a set-point opportunity in the first set.
After Alcaraz had taken a 4-2 lead in the opening set with a break of serve in the fifth game, Sinner came back to level things out in the eighth. They held on to their serves after that with Alcaraz facing a break-point in the 12th game that Sinner missed.
From that point on, Alcaraz look laser-focussed, winning the tie-breaker and not losing more than two points in any of his service games. In turn he also broke Sinner very early and held on to his serve to pocket the encounter.
Alcaraz, who had earlier beaten Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets in the quarterfinal, will look to become the youngest player to win both ATP Indian Wells and Miami – having won the latter last year. Can he find a way past the former world number one?

It took Medvedev some time to get going and it wasn’t the easiest of wins for the world number six either but in the end he found a way to register a straight-set victory over Frances Tiafoe.
Medvedev won 7-5, 7-6 (4) to enter the final in Indian Wells for the first time in his career. It will also be his seventh appearance at a Masters 1000 final.
On 18 successive wins this season, Medvedev faced a few blips in reaching the title-deciding round, as he frittered away seven match-points and failed to serve out the match at 5-4 and 6-5 in the second set.
Fortunately for the Russian, he did not let those serving yips affect him in the ensuing tie-breaker in which he eased his opponent.
Medvedev’s previous victories included three-set wins over Ilya Ivashka and Alexander Zverev with the latter encounter resulting in a potentially difficult ankle injury as well. He has done well to shrug that off but Alcaraz will provide a different – and difficult – challenge to the fifth seed.
Can Medvedev now clinch his fourth ATP title in five weeks after his victories at the Rotterdam Open, ATP Doha and ATP Dubai previously this year?
Alcaraz holds a slight edge on these courts which are not as quick as some of those that Medvedev might have faced in Rotterdam, Dubai and Doha earlier this year. Which is also why Alcaraz starts off a 4/5 favourite and we will have to go with that.
