Alexander Zverev has no doubts about who he thinks the better player is between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.
The World number one and four-time Grand Slam champion were the leading figures on the ATP Tour in 2024, winning 13 titles between them.
They also claimed the year’s four Grand Slams, with Sinner winning the hard court majors while Alcaraz lifted the majors on grass and clay.
Alexander Zverev faced both players on multiple occasions to varying degrees of success, in 2024, but after their performances across the last 12 months, it is clear in the German’s mind who is the world’s best.
Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have established themselves at the forefront of a new era in men’s tennis post Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
They have six Grand Slam between them, both players have been World number one and their rivalry looks set to be an iconic one.
One of the biggest threats to their success is Zverev, who climbed back to World number two and achieved the second highest number of wins behind Sinner. Having watched their progress in 2024, Zverev thinks Sinner is the best player in the world ahead of Alcaraz.
He told Tennis Magazine: “I’ve known him [Sinner] since he was 16 or 17 years old. He trained with Riccardo Piatti near Monte Carlo. Whenever it rained, we went there because there was a hall there. So I’ve known him since he was a young boy at the academy
“In terms of tennis, he absolutely deserves to be number one in the world. He has won two Grand Slam titles, three Masters titles and the ATP Finals. He is the best player in the world, he has won the most titles.
“Carlos is someone I really get on well with. We’ve had some special moments together, playing the biggest matches against each other on the court and spending a bit more time together off the court.
“That’s what has developed. Every time we play, and every time we’ve played this year, it’s been very a high level with a lot of entertainment to watch and it’s just fun to be on the court with him.”
Zverev has produced some close battles against Sinner and Alcaraz on the ATP Tour. Unlike most players on the circuit, the two-time Grand Slam runner-up has a winning record against both players.
Zverev has won four of his six battles against Sinner, including their two last 16 meetings at the US Open in 2021 and 2023.
The Italian won their first meeting at the 2020 French Open in four sets, and emerged victorious in their latest contest at the Cincinnati Masters semi-final in August.
Zverev has faced Alcaraz on 11 occasions, and has six wins to his name. He claimed their last meeting which came as recently as November’s ATP Finals.
They split their four matches in 2024, with Zverev also winning at the Australian Open in January, while Alcaraz won their battles at Indian Wells and the French Open final.
