As luxurious and maximalist styles surge in interest, so too has sustainable design. The upshot is eco-couture, a trend that marries opulence and sustainability for a timeless and organic feel that can be infused with tons of personality.
At this year’s Edmonton Fall Home Show, taking place Oct. 13 to 15 at the Edmonton Expo Centre, eco-couture will be a focal point of the event’s many experts, designers, showcases and experiences.

“When it comes to eco-couture, there’s room for everyone,” says Linger Design Studio founder Amanda Lwanga. “Sometimes those terms put together seem like oil and water but, to me, eco goes with everything. Sustainability should go with every aesthetic.”
Whether you’re looking to incorporate sustainable materials into a redesign or want inspiration in the form of nature, this is what the highly anticipated event has in store.
According to Lwanga, the design industry is one of the largest global emitters of greenhouse gasses — a stark reality she’s actively challenging in her own design practice. During the event, she’ll be taking to The Sleep Country Main Stage to provide a masterclass on creating sustainable interiors that are functional, practical and lavish.
“Attendees can expect to learn some of the processes and practices used to bring sustainability into their spaces,” says Lwanga. “We’ll talk about what it’s like to work with a local furniture maker or to go vintage shopping and get creative in terms of how to reimagine certain objects.”

HGTV Canada’s Bryan Baeumler will also be back as the Show’s headliner to present tangible tips on how to undertake elaborate home renovations and redesigns that will breathe new life into your space. Airing this fall, a new television series follows Baeumler as he hits the road to help budding Canadian business owners open or revive their businesses.
When it comes to designing responsibly, DIY projects that upcycle materials — whether they be vintage finds or items from around your home — are both a friend to your wallet and the environment. Colleen Pastoor of Lemon Thistle will be giving pointers on how to plan a DIY room makeover that’s cost-effective and easy to execute.
Stepping into the world of DIY design, Thistle will take attendees through her own design process, from beginner-friendly crafts to advanced undertakings. The DIY pro can help you harness your own skills so you can unleash your creativity and add a personal touch to your space.
Bringing an eclectic mix of unforgettable fashion and eccentric décor to the Edmonton Home Show are Tipsy Palm, Alexander & Rose and Blu Poppie Vintage, which will present an array of curated home goods as part of the event’s CURATE Vintage Market. Expect to find a labyrinth of vintage furniture, clothing and home items — with a side of expert advice from thrifting gurus and business owners.

“I love the idea of using vintage pieces — it doesn’t need to look like your grandma’s basement,” says Lwanga. “It’s a really fun process of discovery to figure out how to get what I want in a way that honors the environment.”
Whether it means working with a local electrician to rewire a vintage light fixture or reinventing a flea market find into sculptural art, she’s a fan of the burgeoning second-hand economy.
The Show offers attendees the chance to browse artisanal pieces from local vendors (think: those special pieces that bring uniqueness and warmth to a home). For handcrafted items, be sure to hit up the CRAFTY Pop Up Market for a dose of trendy home décor, luxurious textiles, stunning wall art and hand-finished furniture.
The ultimate destination for lovers of handmade goods and décor, attendees will have the opportunity to connect with local makers and artisans from across the province.
Aside from loads of inspiration, the Show promises to connect attendees with design veterans and sought-after contractors who can offer advice on your next home project.
From guidance on expansive home renovations, including flooring, appliances, houseware and organization solutions, to figuring out how you can get a pool installed by next summer, experts around every corner will be eagerly awaiting queries.
