Guyan, WV-The Cleveland State men’s golf team sits in fourth place in the 13-team Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational after posting an 8-under par team total through the first 36 holes. It was a strong start for CSU in its first tournament of the fall season as the Vikings carded a 1-over 285 in the opening round before catching fire in round two with a 9-under 275. The round two total sets a new record for the lowest single round in program history, besting the previous mark of 277 set back in 2007.
Host Marshall leads the field at 23-under par. The Vikings sit five shots back of second-place Morehead State and three shots back of third-place Longwood.
Three of the five Cleveland State starters are in red figures through two rounds and all three are in the top 20 in the individual standings.
Brody Simms is in fourth place sitting at 6-under through 36 holes. Simms posted a 1-over 72 in the opening round and followed it up with a sizzling 7-under 64 in the second round. Simms was stellar on the front nine in round two, as he carded six birdies and three pars to post an opening nine 30. He closed with a 1-under 34 with birdies on two of the final three holes on the back nine. His 64 is the second-best single-round individual score in program history, one shy of the record of 63. Simms sits one shot back of a trio of players tied for the lead at 7-under. The 64 is also a new career-low for Simms, two better than his previous low of 66 set last season.
Freshman Ryan Dinan, making his collegiate debut, turned in back-to-back scores of 1-under 70 on day one to sit at 2-under par in a tie for 12th place. Dinan played steady golf throughout the day carding two birdies against one bogey in his opening round to start the day in red figures. He added five more birdies against two bogeys and a double bogey in his second round to finish the day at 2-under. Dinan also had a strong start to his second round posting four birdies against one bogey for a 3-under 33.
Dillon Pendergast was the third Viking in red figures on day one finishing at 1-under and tied for 20th place. Pendergast opened with an even par round of 71 which featured four birdies and an eagle on the par-5 11th hole. He improved in round two posting four birdies against a bogey and a double bogey to finish at 1-under 70. Pendergast carded a streak of three birdies in a row on holes three, four and five to get off to a great start in the second round.
Mason Frazier is tied for 32nd place at 2-over after 36 holes. Frazier opened with a 2-over 73 in the first round and improved on that total in the second round posting an even par 71. Dominik Cosic and Alex Anderson are tied for 43rd place at 4-over par. Cosic posted scores of 72-74. Anderson, playing as an individual, tallied scores of 75-71.
The third and final round begins tomorrow morning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
