Wide receiver Michael Gallup is retiring from the NFL, according to a Tuesday report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Once a rising star in Dallas, the 28-year-old signed with the Las Vegas Raiders in April upon being released from the Cowboys after six seasons. The Raiders placed him on the reserve/retired list Tuesday, which allows teams to retain the rights to a player during their contract term.

Gallup was drafted in the third round 81st overall by Dallas in 2018 after an unconventional road to the League. After beginning his college football career at Butler Community College, Gallup sat out most of his sophomore season due to an injury. He then transferred to Colorado State, where he would eventually become a consensus All-American.

Gallup enjoyed a productive rookie season upon joining the Cowboys, drawing in 33 receptions for 507 yards and two touchdowns. He more than doubled those totals in his second year, notching 66 receptions for 1,107 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns, in what would ultimately the best season of his career.

The Atlanta native had a slight downturn in Year 3. Then, in Week 1 of 2021, Gallup suffered a calf injury that held him out until November. Mere weeks later, he tore his ACL. That offseason, the Cowboys signed Gallup to a five-year, $62.5 million extension, but he would not be the same after recovering from the injury. In 2022, Gallup caught for only 424 yards across 14 games, and after another tough year, the Cowboys and Gallup parted ways in March.

Still, upon news of his retirement, Cowboys fans on social media expressed gratitude for the receiver’s time in Dallas, noting that in his final few games, Gallup caught a touchdown against the Philadelphia Eagles and pulled in over 100 yards in the Cowboys’ playoff game against Green Bay.
