Things seem to be clicking for this eight-year-old when coming back into form in March winning by 20 lengths and following that victory up with a decent second place at Haydock next time.
Has now finished in the top three in eight of his nine runs over fences and can’t be ruled out against this type of opposition where he’s given plenty of weight while fresh off a break.
This is as open as you can get with the Long Distance Hurdle as a Grade 2 contest.
And it’s these two pictured above that could be battling it out to the line again – a pair you can’t rule out either despite them not winning recently.
Thomas Darby won last year and Paisley Park has come first, second and third from 2019-2021.
The 3m hurdle sees all bar two, Tea Clipper and Dashel Drasher winning over this distance before.
But Champ, with Henderson likely to see plenty of his big guns winning at Newbury as they often do as favourite in the JP McManus colours.
He tailed off at Aintree last time out but does well coming back from a break and was close up in his two other runs last season.
He’s also down to a dangerous mark, 161, just 6lb higher than winning at Ascot last December in the Long Walk Hurdle, beating Paisley Park.
Henry Oliver-trained horse looks to improve from his one run this season after taking a maiden hurdle by over four lengths to Mortlach, who eventually became a multiple winner.
He’s given 11lb to Oscars Leader but is still lightly raced – and bumped into Al Zaraqaan and Saligo Bay with the latter winning on his second outing after.
2/1 looks a great price for that up against some who are switching back to hurdles from fences.
Four runs over fences has produced four winners for this Donald McCain-trained runner.
He’s now rated 140, the top-weight in this and can’t be ruled out after winning on his first run of the season.
Theo Gillard takes the ride this time and takes off 3lb which will help offset enough to make the race even more competitive and should justify favouritism.
Venetia Williams trains this promising looking hurdler who made an encouraging seasonal reappearance only beaten by a nose by Sayadam.
Has come second four times now though but surely is well-weighted to finally make the step forward and win for the second time.
