BUFFALO, N.Y. — Every day nearly one million people cross the United States border by car or foot. The Peace Bridge sees thousands of those travelers and U.S. Customs and Border Protections (CBP) agents check each person individually to ensure those crossing into the U.S. are complying with federal laws.
“We live in this community,” said Giorgio Fuda, public affairs liaison for CBP. “It’s important to us that we’re not allowing people to come in that are bad actors.”
Fuda has been with CBP since 2009 and said the technology at the border has changed significantly, improving the work flow for agents.
Facial recognition cameras, X-ray machines and advanced databases help keep traffic moving and allow agents to interview drivers and catch prohibited items before they enter.
His advice to travelers?
“Make sure that you’re telling us what’s in the vehicle. So there’s no surprises. If you declare it, in most cases there won’t be a problem,” he said.
