FLUSHING, NY — In a highly anticipated matchup, the No. 1 player in the world takes on the home favorite in the final Grand Slam match of the season, as Jannik Sinner faces Taylor Fritz in the U.S. Open Men’s Final.
(1) Jannik Sinner vs. (12) Taylor Fritz
Fritz is trying to do something that has not been done in 21 years. Since Andy Roddick took down Juan Carlos Ferrero in the 2003 final, no American man has won the U.S. Open. Fritz has given himself a great opportunity to do that with a series of great performances. He defeated top-10 opponents in Casper Ruud and Alexander Zverev to advance to the semifinals, where Fritz knocked off fellow countryman Frances Tiafoe in a five-set battle on Friday night. This will be a tough matchup heading into his first major final.
That is not the case for Sinner. The Italian is coming into just his second Grand Slam championship match, but his first this past January worked well, as he defeated Daniil Medvedev to win the Australian Open. While he came up short in Paris and London, Sinner has ran through the competition in the U.S. Open, having lost just two sets thus far. Even in his semifinal match against Jack Draper, battling injury, Sinner was able to win in the minimum.
These two have met twice at Indian Wells, with Sinner and Fritz each picking up wins over each other.
