Jon Gruden was one of the most accomplished coaches in the NFL before he left behind the grind of being a head coach for a stint in the broadcast booth. Gruden appeared on Monday Night Football and several college programs with ESPN, though many teams had attempted to lure him back during his nine-year absence.

That reality would come true when after nine years, he accepted the head coaching position with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2018. He would serve in the position until 2021, when an investigation into the then-Washington Football Team revealed emails sent between Gruden and then-general manager Bruce Allen.

Gruden used racist, misogynistic, and homophobic slurs towards NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and other figures in the NFL. The result of the discovery was Gruden being removed from the league and other steep punishments like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers removing him from the team’s Ring of Honor.

Gruden has since been attempting to sue the NFL and Roger Goodell for leaking the emails. Though the NFL initially attempted to get the case thrown out, it still continues. The most recent development on the cause occurred in July when, according to a report from the Associated Press, “Gruden lost a bid Monday for three Nevada Supreme Court justices to reconsider whether a lawsuit he filed against the NFL over emails leaked to the media before he resigned as coach of the Las Vegas Raiders should be heard in court or in private arbitration.”

The result of the emails and the case against the NFL was that Gruden had only been returning as a consultant for some teams, but not as a coach. However, it appears Gruden might be making a splashier comeback after all, and with a surprising team.

Gruden arrived at the Kansas City Chiefs training camp and was shown decked out in Chiefs gear.

Per a report from Pro Football Talk, “Gruden is wearing Chiefs gear and working alongside head coach Andy Reid and several Chiefs assistants, according to reporters on the scene. Gruden and Reid have known each other for decades, having both worked on the Packers’ offensive staff from 1992 to 1994.”

Though it may have only been a matter of time until Gruden found his way back into a more prominent role within the NFL, it’s shocking that he is now working with the Chiefs. Gruden has coached the Raiders on two separate occasions in his career, and the Chiefs are the direct rival of his former team.

While Gruden can consult and coach for whoever he wants to, it’s still quite surprising that he has chosen a steep divisional rival with whom to make his return.

The Chiefs have not yet announced if Gruden is being brought on as a coach or as a consultant much like he was with the New Orleans Saints, but seeing him in complete Chiefs gear is quite surprising.
