The Olympics continues with Team GB’s focus remaining on the track at both the athletics and the cycling on day 12 of Paris 2024.
Matthew Hudson-Smith’s form in his 400m semi-final marks him as a gold medal contender ahead of tonight’s final at the Stade de France, following memorable medals for Keely Hodgkinson and Josh Kerr over the past two nights.
Great Britain have also made a great start in the velodrome and can add further success this evening in the team pursuit. The men’s team will face Australia for gold later, and the women’s team led by Elinor Barker will try to match them this afternoon.
Last night, American Cole Hocker stunned world champion Kerr and reigning Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen to win a sensational 1500m gold, while Dina Asher-Smith and Daryll Neita missed out on a medal in the women’s 200m final by the barest of margins.
This morning, golf resumes Le National as the women’s strokeplay competition gets underway. Charley Hull and Georgia Hall lead Great Britain’s bid for gold, but the favourite is the world’s best player this year: USA’s Nelly Korda.

Olympics 2024: Men’s 5000m heats
There’s been an incident in the men’s 5000m heats over on the track. Team GB’s George Mills was one of four athletes who collided and fell on the final straight of their heat.
The race was tightly packed the whole way around and Mills is furious woth France’s Hugo Hay after walking over the finish line.
Narve Gilje Nordas of Norway went on to win with Mills left hoping he is reinstated.

Olympics 2024: Diving – men’s 3m springboard semi-finals
Five dives down, one to go.
Wang Zongyuan (435.25) leads the way and looks like the heavy favourite to take the gold medal tomorrow with his closest challenger being teammate Xie Siyi (408.95).
Jack Laugher from Great Britain sits, a little less comfortably, in third with a score of 384.25 and he’s just ahead of Mexico’s Osmar Olvera Ibarra who leaps up to fourth after a dive which scored in the low 80s.
Still in fifth is Jordan Houlden on 365.75 and he’ll be heading to the final if he can put in one more decent dive.

Now it’s time for a back 3 1/2 somersault tuck from Jordan Houlden.
The difficulty here is 3.6 and he could do with a strong dive. His spin is a little slow but the kick is decent and he archs his back once more heading into the water.
That lets him down slightly with and he scores a 70.20. It’s a solid outing though.
Jack Laugher decides to take on a 3.8 difficulty, forward 4 1/2 somersault tuck. He’s messed up the last two dives and doesn’t nail this one either.
His jump is good, his spin is quick but his entry is slightly askew. As such he scores a 76.00 which keeps him in control of third place.

Olympics 2024: Women’s Golf
Team GB’s Charley Hull recorded a double bogey on the opening hole after finding the water off the tee. It got her round off to a terrible start but she’s recovered slightly with a run of three consecutive pars.
There are plenty of opportunities for birdies on this course and once Hull’s confidence returns she can start to move in the correct direction.

No big deviations on the scoreboard with the two Chinese divers continuing to show just how amazing they are. Wang Zongyuan scores an 89.25 for his fourth dive.
He’s comfortably in the lead with an overall score of 348.85. Xie Siyi is in second with a 320.15 while Jack Laugher’s poor dive hasn’t hurt his position and he’s in third with 308.25.
Jordan Houlden (295.55) is fighting to get back into the top four but a fine dive from South Korea’s Woo Haram places him just above the Brit with a score of 296.25.

Okay then. Dive number four for Jordan Houlden.
It’s a forward 2 1/2 somersault twists in pike position with a difficulty of 3.9. The hardest dive he’s taken on today. Nice. It’s another decent effort but looks slightly hurried for the Brit.
The entry is slightly off tilt but the difficulty raises the score to a 76.05 which Houlden will be pleased with.
Jack Laugher is doing the exact same dive. Oh no.
He can’t get his legs up and his rotation is slow. He’s a long way off entering the water vertically and only scores a 64.35. That’s a blow but he’s got the buffer of his previous dives to help him out.

Olympics 2024: Women’s 100m hurdles
Team GB’s Cindy Sember made a slow start in lane nine for her 110m hurdles first round. She recovers brilliantly to finish second in her heat and qualifies for the semi-finals.
Defending Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico led from start to finish with Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska taking the third and the final qualification spot.
Sember spoke to the BBC after qualifying for the semi-finals with a time of 12.72. She said: “It felt pretty good, I think I have a lot more in the tank, but I had to get the jitters out, the nerves out and I’m ready to bring something special in the semi-final.
“It’s been really hard with us at the end of the championships, but I’m just blessed to be here and I’m happy that I’m healthy, so I’m very excited and I know there’s a lot in store.
“Honestly, I think I’m ready for a medal. I definitely feel capable. I need to put some parts of my race together but with god’s grace, I’ll be alright.”

Olympics 2024: Diving – men’s 3m springboard semi-finals
That was a bad round for Team GB with both divers messing up. If they want to challenge the Chinese (potentially for medals in the final) they need to nail all six attempts.
As things stand it’s the two Chinese divers, Wan Zongyuan (259.60) and Xie Siyi (250.15) who have the top two spots.
Jack Laugher (243.90) is now down to third with Moritz Wesemann (223.15) of Germany leapfrogging Jordan Houlden (219.50) into fourth place.
Both Brits are heading into the final for now but they’ll know they need to keep their levels up.

Now it’s Jordan Houlden’s turn to execute a reverse 3 1/2 somersault tuck. Jack Laugher nailed this dive a few minutes ago, what can Houlden do with it?
It’s okay. Perhaps not quite at the level of Laugher, he gets high but kicks out slightly too early and has to arch his back on entry to the water. The judges don’t miss that and it’s a score of 66.50, Houlden’s lowest effort of these semi-finals.
For Laugher, he goes for an inward 3 1/2 somersault tuck. It’s slightly easier in terms of difficulty but he doesn’t execute it as well as he could.
He pushes off the board and comes into the water on an angle. He’s not happy and the scores reflect that. A 69.70.

In diving the Chinese athletes are the ones you need to worry about. Wang Zongyuan absolutely smashes his second dive and edges away from Jack Laugher of Great Britain.
Wang leads with an overall score of 177.70 with Laugher just behind on 174.20.
Wang’s teammate Xie Siyi takes third place with a score of 169.15 while Jordan Houlden has moved up to fourth with a very solid 153.00.
So far so good for Team GB.
