Jonbon’s loss to Elixir De Nutz in the rescheduled Clarence House Chase on Cheltenham Trials Day has significantly affected the betting for the Queen Mother Champion Chase.
Prior to this upset, the bookmakers had viewed the two-mile race as a direct battle between Jonbon and El Fabiolo.
However, El Fabiolo has now emerged as the hot favourite at 1/2, with Jonbon’s odds lengthening to 7/2. Their previous encounter in last year’s Arkle Chase, where El Fabiolo triumphed by five lengths, has given him an edge in the anticipated rematch this year.
Since securing his first Grade 1 win, Elixir De Nutz’s price has shortened to 20/1 to win the Champion Chase. He was a 22/1 shot ahead of the Clarence House Chase – which was moved to Cheltenham after the previous week’s Ascot meeting was cancelled – and Ferny Hollow (12/1), Captain Guinness, and Edwardstone (both 16/1) are all positioned ahead of him in the Champion Chase betting.
Dinoblue is the third favourite at 7/1, and the Willie Mullins-trained horse also recorded a first Grade 1 victory at Leopardstown last month.
Gentleman de Mee was convincingly beaten into second place by Dinoblue at Leopardstown but has demonstrated in the past that he improves as the season progresses and is currently 28/1 for this year’s Champion Chase.
