TUPPER LAKE — The reigning champions are back.
After winning their first Empire Professional Baseball League title a season ago, the Tupper Lake Riverpigs are set to return to the diamond today, when they host the Plattsburgh Thunderbirds at the Municipal Park at 7:05 p.m.
The season-opening contest will be a rematch of the last year’s Empire League Championship, in which the Riverpigs bested the Thunderbirds three games to two.
The Saranac Lake Surge will open its season against Tupper Lake on the road Saturday. The game will also start at 7:05 p.m.
The Surge’s home opener will be on June 20 against the latest Empire Baseball League expansion team, the Malone Border Hounds. The game will be played on the Petrova Field at 4:30 p.m.
While the roster has not been announced, the Riverpigs will have a new manager in Arthur “Ted” Stenberg after Jonathan Albaladejo left the team to sign as a bullpen coach with the Toros de Tijuana of the Mexico Baseball League. The Surge will also have a new manager, with Plattsburgh native Todd Everleth managing the team.
The Empire Baseball League is slated to have games every day — weather permitting — starting Friday until July 19. The league will then hold a playoff tournament at the end of the season.
