The new wheelchair basketball program at St. Clair County Community College has a new coach to lead the team.
Jordan Scheidecker, a national wheelchair basketball player and coach, is coming to SC4 from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater to lead the new program.
“Scheidecker has a great background working with students with disabilities and coaching athletes in wheelchair basketball,” SC4 Senior Vice President Pete Lacey said.
The community college’s wheelchair basketball program is the first of its kind at a community college in the United States. Other programs have been set up at four-year universities, which Lacey said SC4’s team will be competing against.
Scheidecker officially starts on Oct. 30, though he will be in Port Huron from Sept. 29 to Oct. 1 as the college hosts the Wolverine Invitational, a tournament event for wheelchair basketball that invites teams from across the United States and Ontario. SC4 is working with the University of Michigan to host the tournament.
“I’m really excited to join the SC4 community and create greater awareness, participation in and support for adaptive sports and students with disabilities,” Scheidecker said in a news release from SC4. “We want to be a place that helps people find success and ultimately move on to where they want to go, athletically and academically.”
Scheidecker was the outreach specialist for the Students with Disabilities Center at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and assistant director of the university’s wheelchair basketball camp.
The college’s wheelchair basketball team has eight players, according to Lacey. Though enrolled students and those with disabilities are given priority, Lacey said anyone is free to join the team.
The team will have their first official game at the invitational. The competition will be a round-robin tournament. After the first games are held dates will be announced for future events.
Anyone interested in joining SC4’s wheelchair basketball team can email the college’s athletics office at athletics@sc4.edu, or call them at 810-989-5662.
