Flavio Cobolli advanced to the last 16 of the Cincinnati Masters when Luciano Darderi retired at the Lindner Family Tennis Center on Thursday evening.
Cobolli, ranked No 31, led 7-6 (4), 3-1 when Darderi, ranked No 34, pulled out at the Lindner Family Tennis Center on Thursday evening.
Flavio Cobolli will face the winner of the match between Pole Hubert Hurkacz, the No 5 seed, and Japanese qualifier Yoshihito Nishioka next.
Ahead of his victory, Cobolli edged out American Tommy Paul, the No 10 seed (6-2, 4-6, 7-5).
Luciano Darderi won against Chilean Alejandro Tabilo (6-3, 7-6 (5)) in the previous round of the Cincy Open.
