Luke Raley has been on a nice little run in terms of extra-base hits. In his last five games, he has five hits that have been greater than a single. He’s slugging .692 in the month of September and it should be getting better with this pitching matchup. He’ll face Yu Darvish, who is not only coming back from injury gingerly, but also has bad history with Raley. The Mariners outfielder is a career 4-for-8 off of Darvish with half of the hits going for more than one base.
Okay, maybe this one seems a bit too easy. He’s failed to record a hit in his last four games played and the outlook doesn’t appear better for this one. He faces Reynaldo Lopez, who he has not recorded a hit against in 12 career appearances. That includes fanning five of those times. The Braves bullpen has been good enough for me to trust he isn’t going to steal one late either.
Although he is coming off a rough outing, the two prior to that saw Arrighetti throw 13.2 innings and strike out 17. Those games were against two of the better hitting teams in Baltimore and Philadelphia. Now he’ll get the Athletics, a team who is 25th in the majors with 9.20 strikeouts per game. They’ve been even worse lately with 11 in their last game and 9.57 over their last three. Arrighetti should be able to find one early.
