VIDEO: Assesing the idea of reclassifying | College Basketball Recruiting Weekly
Virginia men’s basketball has picked up its first commitment from the 2024 class. After officially visiting the Cavaliers last week Jacob Cofie has decided to publicly announce his commitment to Tony Bennett and the Wahoos.
“I ultimately chose Virginia because I felt it was the best school to develop me as a player and take my game to the next level,” Cofie said about his decision to commit to the ‘Hoos. “Also being coached by Tony Bennett would be an honor. I feel like there’s room on the team for me to work hard and earn an opportunity to get minutes as a freshman. And when I visited Virginia, it felt like it felt like family like right when I got there. I knew it was a spot for me.”
The four-star Sammamish (Wash.) forward Eastside Catholic visited Charlottesville last weekend where he was able to speak with the staff on a more face-to-face basis, including with UVa head coach Tony Bennett.
“He feels like my game can definitely go to the next level. He said I’ll thrive in the system, and they think I’m high level player.”
During his visit, he was also able to spend some time with freshmen Blake Buchanan and Christian Bliss and redshirt freshman Leon Bond.
“They love it,” said Cofie about the players’ message about Virginia.”They feel like everything Tony Bennett says is gonna be the truth. He’s not gonna sugarcoat anything to you. He keeps it real and he develops players – so if you put in the work like you’ll become the player you want to be. They feel like whatever they’re doing now, they’re getting a lot better. They like Tony Bennett, the whole coaching staff.. they love it. They have nothing bad to say.”
The coaching staff made it no secret they wanted Cofie to join them in Charlottesville with Bennett and UVA assistnat Ron Sanchez recruiting the playmaker relentlessly.
“They both had been recruiting me pretty hard, because they recruited me late, they gave their best their best recruiting they could to get me because they recruited me during the {each Jam.
“It is a defensive school and they have shown me what other players in their system have done… They play great competition every night and are really interesting.”
Cofie picked the Wahoos over other offers that included Virginia, Washington, Southern Cal, and Ohio State. In the latest rankings Cofie moved up to inside the Top 100 on 247Sports, he currently ranks No. 81 player in the class and No. 15 power forward.
