The hype train couldn’t be much louder behind Conner Weigman, and the list of preseason watchlists and accolades could hardly be any longer.
One of the latest of those the Texas A&M quarterback has been added to is the Comeback Player Of The Year watchlist. Weigman and Aggies tight end Donovan Green were both named to the list.
There are some mixed opinions surrounding Weigman’s true candidacy for the award, given the fact he has a mere eight starts under his belt so far in his college career. That’s not much of his fault at all, though, given that head coach Jimbo Fisher made the decision against starting him early in the 2022 season, instead handing the reins to Haynes King and Max Johnson.
Both quarterbacks sustained injuries, thrusting the young Weigman into action.
Weigman got off to an impeccably hot start, turning heads most when he took the field against the No. 15-ranked Ole Miss Rebels on Oct. 29, putting together a 4-touchdown performance in which he completed 63.6% of his passes without tossing an interception.
Most recently, in 2023, Weigman saw the field for four total games, completing 68.9% of his passes for 979 yards with 8 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.
How much he’s able to build off of the flashes he’s shown with the bar set sky-high in 2024 will be something to watch. The road to doing just that starts on Aug. 31 when the Aggies face off against Riley Leonard and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
