COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — A former Heisman quarterback organized a charity golf tournament benefiting mental health and NIL programs for current Buckeyes.

Ohio State legend Troy Smith raised money for charity with a host of other big name Buckeyes, includingof Tedd Ginn Jr., Beanie Wells, Jim Tressell and others.

The golf outing benefited t former Buckeye offensive lineman Harry Miller’s foundation, Don’t Make It Weird, which seeks to promote an open space to talk about mental health.

In 2022, Miller medically retired from football and transformed into an advocate for mental health.

“Harry Miller is a good friend of mine,” Smith said. “He’s been through a lot. We all have been through a lot. Mental health is paramount and incredibly real for everyone until you have the right thought process until you have the different things that you can go to in your tool belt to help you deal with some of the ups and downs you go through. Things like this are important.”

The golf outing also raised money to support NIL through THE foundation, specifically benefiting the foundation of the Buckeyes offense.

“We’re giving back to the offensive line. The big handsome up front without those guys, nothing works. Through and through. Whether it’s scout team or the starting guys they protect us so why not give them a little something, in a major way we want to give back and let them know they’re appreciated,” said Smith.

The gathering of Buckeyes brought back memories for many.

Former wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. said this event was no different than being back on the same team. “He throws the pass I catch it. Just happy to be around and see the guys.”

National champion head coach Jim Tressel likened his former quarterback to one of his sons.

“I feel like [Smith is] one of my sons, and it was his confidence in his high school coach, coach Ginn, and our program that really gave him the confidence that he could go on and do some special things.”
