Talen Horton-Tucker is reportedly still looking for a “real” offer in free agency.
Brett Siegel of Clutch Points reported Thursday that the guard “hasn’t received any real offers from NBA teams” and could instead generate interest from European clubs. Siegel listed the Dallas Mavericks as a team that was thought to be interested in Horton-Tucker but has since added Spencer Dinwiddie.
Horton-Tucker, 23, spent the last two seasons with the Utah Jazz after starting his career with the Los Angeles Lakers. He averaged 10.1 points, 2.4 rebounds and 3.5 assists last season.
After emerging as a hidden gem in the 2019 NBA draft class, Horton-Tucker plateaued after signing a three-year, $30.8 million contract in 2021. He’s not shown marked improvements in any area of his game and was playing just 19.8 minutes per game for a lottery team last season.
Perhaps a change of scenery could allow him to revitalize his career. After all, he seemed to thrive playing next to high-level talent in LeBron James and Anthony Davis on the Lakers and could play well given the extra space created by playing alongside star players.
As it stands, he is still looking for a deal.
At his best, Horton-Tucker is a solid secondary ball-handler who can help guide an offense off the bench. That might be all he is at the end of the day, but that has value on a roster.
If Horton-Tucker can improve his three ball into league-average range (29.3 percent for his career), he might outplay any new contract offer he receives late in the offseason.
