Stefanos Tsitsipas and Tallon Griekspoor will be squaring off for just the second time in their careers when they battle for a quarterfinal spot at the ABN AMRO Open on Thursday. Their only previous encounter came at the 2023 Australian Open, where Tsitsipas cruised 6-2, 7-6(5), 6-3.
A move to indoor hard courts–especially in Rotterdam–should be just what the doctor ordered for Griekspoor. This is without question the 43rd-ranked Dutchman’s favorite tournament. Not only is he playing in front of the home crowd, but he also reached back-to-back semifinals in 2023 and 2024 (lost to Jannik Sinner both times). Griekspoor is off to another strong start this year, having scraped past Matteo Berrettini 6-3, 6-7(2) 7-6(4) on Wednesday.
Tsitsipas struggled in 2024 and this season is also off to a rough start. The 12th-ranked Greek is 2-2 with losses to Alexander Shevchenko and Alex Michelsen to go along with wins over world No. 196 Pablo Carreno Busta and world No. 138 Harold Mayot (in the Rotterdam opening round on Tuesday).
Both guys boast stellar indoor records, but Tsitsipas’ game really doesn’t work as well on this surface as it does on clay. His backhand has gone completely off the rails in recent years when he doesn’t have time to set up and rip it.
Griekspoor is more than capable of exploiting that weakness, so look for him to pick up yet another victory in front of the Dutch fans.
