SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – The South Bend Community School Corporation and the South Bend Fire Department came together on Tuesday for community fire education at Blackthorn Golf Course.
Several people came out to attend the event. They raised money for fire education programs for grades Kindergarten through sixth.
Groups came out for food, drinks and a chance to win a $100 gift card.
This is the first year of the event, and organizers believed something like this is necessary with kids still at home on summer break. Plus, the young lives that were lost in the “Smith6″ fire earlier this year.
“Obviously, we had a terrible tragedy earlier this year with the loss of some lives in the fire, and we felt it was important to raise awareness around fire safety in our community,” said Tim Firestone, owner of Blackthorn Golf Course. “So, a group of folks got together and decided to put on a golf outing, and earlier today we had a family day with fire games and activities.”
Organizers of the event plan to make this an annual event and have more fire education events throughout the year.
