The Denver Broncos are in the process of preparing for a big season. A rookie QB looks like the potential starter, and Sean Payton’s plan is in motion. That’s the big picture.
In the midst of all that, guys are fighting for their NFL career. David Sills is exactly that. His NFL career has been marred by injury and COVID, but he hopes to take another step forward with the Broncos this season.
David Sills | Wide Receiver | #87
Age: 28 | Experience: 4th year | College: West Virginia
Height: 6-3 | Weight: 211 pounds
For Sills, this is a chance to work his way onto a roster. However, at 28 years old, with limited experience, he may find it difficult to get a foothold.
In 2019 he signed with the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted free agent, but was waived soon after. He landed with the New York Giants. There he bounced back and forth from the practice squad, the reserve/COVID list, the active roster, and injured reserve.
There really isn’t much to go on here. A career camp body, at 28 years old, Sills is just trying to make his way onto a squad. It is a massive hill to climb.
Looking at the depth chart, Sills is 12 of 12. Last on the list for the Broncos wide receivers, he is more likely going to vie for a special teams spot. For that to happen, he is going to need to put some tape out there during a preseason game.
Most likely, Sills will find himself on the outside looking in. He is a camp body at this point. From there, the practice squad is the realistic goal.
More about the system than Sills himself, we do these roster reviews every year. The NFL is filled with stories similar to Sills. Nothing special. Nothing noteworthy. Just a guy living out his dream as long as he can.
At 28 years old, the most likely scenario for Sills is a regular job just like most of us. He is doing all he can to hang on to that last glimmer of his NFL dream. He, just like so many others, will come to the end far sooner that he hoped. Still, as long as he can hold onto that impossibility, I hope he does.
