Safe to say Magic Johnson isn’t thrilled with Anthony Edwards’ comments about past eras of the NBA.
Edwards, fresh of a starring role on the U.S.’s Olympic gold medal winning team, said in an interview last week that he didn’t “think anybody had skill back then” other than Bulls star Michael Jordan.
“I didn’t watch it back in the day so I can’t speak on it,” Edwards told the Wall Street Journal. “They say it was tougher back then than it is now, but I don’t think anybody had skill back then. (Michael Jordan) was the only one that really had skill, you know what I mean? So that’s why when they saw Kobe (Bryant), they were like, ‘Oh, my God.’ But now everybody has skill.”
Johnson, a former Michigan State star who won five NBA titles with the Lakers in the 1980s, clapped back at Edwards while speaking with ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith.
“I never respond to a guy who’s never won a championship,” Johnson said. “I’ve got nothing to say. He didn’t win a college championship. I don’t even know if he won a high school championship.”
Edwards, 23, was the youngest member of the U.S. team in Paris, but he has never lacked confidence. He famously said before the games that he was the No. 1 option on a team that included LeBron James, Steph Curry and Kevin Durant.
And while it was Curry who ultimately became America’s biggest star at the games, Edwards certainly had his moment by leading the way against Puerto Rico in the group stage, including throwing down a massive windmill dunk in the win.
Edwards was a McDonald’s All-American and unanimous 5-star recruit in the 2019 class.
After starring at Georgia, he led the Timberwolves to the Western Conference finals in his fourth NBA season, averaging 25.9 points, 5.4 rebounds and 5.1 assists.
He will look to win his first NBA title next season.
