Oklahoma head football coach Brent Venables was happy about signing 18 football players in their 2025 recruiting class despite the small number.
The Sooners landing recruits without any “drama” in a tight, competitive college football landscape was the reason.
“What I appreciate, man, there was no drama whatsoever,” Venables said per 247Sports.
“I say this a lot, and this is my 30 years of experience in doing this that if there’s drama in recruiting, whatever that means, if there’s drama in recruiting, there’s going to be drama when they come to your campus. So just always something that I’ve always kept in my back pocket and been very keen to.”
Technically, there was drama involved with incoming five-star commit Michal Fasusi but it all worked out in the Sooners’ head coach’s favor.
Venables tabbed earning Fasusi’s loyalty “a great win for our team, our locker room, and certainly our position group.”
“It’s a great fit for us and certainly is for Mike. Mike is somebody who has a true blue-collar mindset. He’s about development.”
Having a more close-knit group helps strengthen the relationship between the head coach and the player which is exactly the kind of culture Venables aims to foster in Norman.
“I don’t think we had to do anything any different than what we’ve done in the past in regards to, you know, it’s about relationships… Just, our guys, when they commit, it means something,” Venables said.
“We just continue to be who we’ve been. Be consistent, be real, genuine, honest.”
Even though the number is sparse, Venables needs players who choose Oklahoma, sans drama. A passionately focused group will help the Sooners come out better than their previous 6-7 season.
